February 28, 1998: Popularizing Java?

Chatting occasionally with people in different situations while searching for a job, I found the amazing thing: the average programmer or computing-related person in general don't know nothing (or almost nothing) about Java. So I found myself in many situations in the role of a Sun rep. Here is a sample dialog:
- What is about that popular Internet language, you know... How it's called?...
- Javascript?
- Eh, something like that... No, not exactly so... Something more simple...
- Ah, Java maybe?
- Yes, Java. It's different from C?
... I am telling various bullshit about Java and C++, OO, etc...
- It's invented of course by Microsoft?
... I am silent for a minute... Trying to find a decent answer to that question...
- Eh, not... Exactly opposite in a sence...
- So this is not another Windows development environment?
... I am telling various bullshit about virtual machines, bytecode, etc...
(believe me, this is from the real life).
